Installing Lync Server 2010

For installing Lync server topology, i want to brief down some points which will be useful in installing :

1) In wave 13(OCS 2007 R2) we can install AD and OCS on the same machine but Lync server 2010 doesnt allow it. We need to install AD on a separate machine first by using dcpromo.

2) Then next task will be installing AD components of Lync server on AD machine.

3) If you are opting for enterprise edition, install SQL Server on a separate machine. Else just skip this step.

4) Now on another machine from the Lync server deployment wizard install First standard or Enterprise edition.

5) On the same machine install topology builder. From -> All Programs, open topology builder and build a topology. After that publish the topology. For EE, we need to point to SQL server for CMS. And important point here is every organisation irrespective of number of SE and EE pools, a forest can contain only one Central management Store. So if you are planning for a child domain and installing another SE pool in it, we need to get the previous Topology config file and on top of that just we need to publish the SE details.

6) After publishing the topology, install Lync server components.

7) Then from Lync server control panel, we can configure users. For this we need to have silverlight on the machine and also administrator rights need to be given for opening Lync server control panel.

8) Every configuration need to be done from the Lync server control panel. So all the configuration details will be stored at one place.

9) One Mediation server can talk to one IP PSTN Gateway. We cannot have 2 mediation server pools talking to one IP PSTN Gateway.

10) One Forest can have only one Edge server.

11) Installing edge server is tricky. Everything made simple in Lync server 2010. Certificates installation is through good interface at the time of deployment. But as the edge server will be in perimeter network, it cannot contact AD. So before installing edge server details, we need to publish the edge server details from a machine where we can access the AD. It can be either SE machine or mediation server. After doing this we need to click on Install Lync server Components. For any changes to be done on the edge server do the similar procedure. Config file need to be exported from the machine in the domain and import it on the Edge server.

On SE machine:
Export-CsConfiguration -FileName "C:\config.zip"

On Edge Server:
Import-CSConfiguration -FileName "C:config.zip" -LocalStore

12) Certificates on the edge server need to be imported from another machine and assign manually on the edge server.
